Baking a Difference in Chappaqua

Baking a Difference in Chappaqua

The 2013 Great Chappaqua Bake Sale, now in its fourth year, raised more than $20,000 for the nonprofit Share Our Strength and its No Kid Hungry initiative. This year, the bake sale was held in conjunction with the Chappaqua Children's Book Festival.

Chappaqua may be a small community, but it has a big sweet tooth. The annual Great Chappaqua Bake Sale has been a success since its beginning in 2010, raising more than $30,000 in its first three years, but the 2013 sale proved to be the most successful yet, raking in more than $20,000 to help end childhood hunger.

The numbers are startling: Nearly 1 in 5 kids in our country lives in a household that struggles to put food on the table, and those kids are more likely to struggle with health, behavioral, and learning problems. Proceeds from the bake sale go to the nonprofit Share Our Strength and its No Kid Hungry initiative, which seeks to raise awareness about and put a stop to childhood hunger.

This year, the Great Chappaqua Bake Sale was held Oct. 5 at Robert Bell Middle School in conjunction with the Chappaqua Children’s Book Festival. Victoria Kann, author of the popular Pinkalicious series, stopped by the sale to meet visitors and introduce the Pinkalicious Cupcake Cookbook, which she released last month.

In addition to a variety of baked goods, the bake sale featured a raffle with 19 prize packages, worth a total value of $21,000, including two tickets to see LIVE! With Kelly and Michael in NYC.

The Great Chappaqua Bake Sale is consistently recognized by Share Our Strength as a “Bake Sale Rock Star” and was nominated this year for a leadership award from the organization.
