Barbie Gets a Makeover: Mattel Adds Three New Body Types

Barbie Gets a Makeover: Mattel Adds Three New Body Types

Barbie is receiving a makeover for the first time in 57 years.

Mattel, the toy company that produces the iconic Barbie doll, announced that it will be adding three new body types to its Fashionistas line—tall, curvy, and petite. The doll will also be available in a variety of skin tones, hairstyles, eye colors, and, of course, outfits.

"Barbie has always given girls choices—from her 180 careers, to inspirational roles, to her countless fashions and accessories," Evelyn Mazzocco, senior vice president and global general manager of Barbie said in a press release. "We are excited to literally be changing the face of the brand—these new dolls represent a line that is more reflective of the world girls see around them."

Barbie has been the subject of much criticism from parents and others worried that the doll is too thin, models an unnatural body shape, and influences young girls to set unrealistic goals of being just as tall and skinny as their dolls—potentially leading some girls to develop eating disorders. Now, young girls will be able to own Barbie dolls that look more like them.

But, some people are skeptical of the new dolls, saying that they should not define what young girls think beauty is or should look like.

"We believe we have a responsibility to girls and parents to reflect a broader view of beauty," Mazzocco said.

The dolls are now available to order on the Barbie website and will be added to major toy stores this spring.
