Music Institute of Long Island Celebrates 30 Years with a Concert

The concert will take place at the Adelphi University Performing Arts Center in Garden City.

The Music Institute of Long Island, a classical music school located in Manhasset, is celebrating its 30th anniversary, and to celebrate Geri Kushner, who co-owns the school with her sister Carol Kushner, will hold a special concert at the Adelphi University Performing Arts Center in Garden City on Friday, June 12, 2020. Current students and alumni will perform selections from various genres including popular, classical, and chamber.

The school teaches music to both children and adults, ages 3 and up. All lessons are in the classical style, and include violin, viola, cello, guitar, piano, brass instruments including saxophone and flute, and voice. All instructors are professional musicians who have either Master’s or doctorate degrees in their field.

Kushner, who has a Master’s in music performance, believes that playing and performing music is more than just fun. It also give them valuable skills and traits that carry over into adulthood.

"That experience of performing, makes the students present themselves, have confidence, and it carries on in school,” she says.

The skill averages about 200 students at a given time. Many have gone on to become professional musicians, attend performing arts universities like Julliard, Columbia, Yale, University of Pennsylvania, University of Michigan, and Harvard Law School. Many have won various music competitions and participated in youth orchestras during their time at the school.

“We’re proud of all our students,” Kushner says. “We think of them as family, and we even have second-generation family members coming to us as students.”
