As Snow Storm Approaches, NYC Schools Cancel Snow Days

Chancellor Richard Carranza sent a letter to parents earlier today stating that students will learn remotely should schools need to close for inclement weather.

NYC schools have closed many times this school year, but not yet for a snow day. As a massive snowstorm approaches NYC—one that is expected to yield 6-10 inches of snow and potentially cause power outages—schools Chancellor Richard Carranza sent a letter to parents to notify them that schools will be in session remotely even if buildings close.

"This year, if a snowstorm or other weather demands that school buildings close, all schools will still conduct remote learning on that day," Carranza said in his letter. "All students will be expected to log on and engage with their work from home as they do on other days when they learn remotely. Middle and high school students who are already learning remotely every day are expected to attend school remotely, regardless of the weather.

The announcement officially means the days of sleeping in late, watching movies all morning, and going out for an afternoon sledding session could be over for NYC kids. It also begs the question, what will happen with online learning if the city experiences a power outage?

Schools will be in close communication with families regarding the snowstorm beginning tomorrow evening, Wednesday, Dec. 16, according to Carranza's letter. Extra meals will be available to families to take home. If you have questions about your school specifically, Carranza advises you call your principal.

A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for NYC and the entire tri-state area beginning Wednesday at 2pm and is expected to be over by Thursday evening. During the Storm Watch, restaurants will close outdoor dining and NYC Test and Trace testing sites will have limited hours (all sites will cease testing Wednesday at 2pm and resume Thursday at 12pm).
