Our skiing and snowboarding guide includes ski mountains in New York and the slopes of Connecticut, New Jersey, Vermont, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Pennsylvania.


Updated Nov. 2020: Skiing and snowboarding with the family this winter? Our guide includes resorts and mountains just outside of the New York metropolitan area, to the slopes of Connecticut, New Jersey, Vermont, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Pennsylvania. Beginner lessons and kid-friendly slopes for new skiiers and snowboarders are readily available at most mountains. No need to haul your gear, either—you can rent skis, snowboards, helmets, and all of your winter sporting needs right on site. Please note: Hours and programs are subject to change, especially due to the pandemic. We recommend calling ahead to confirm details before your visit.

Belleayre Mountain

Catamount

Holiday Mountain Ski and Fun Park

Hunter Mountain

Mount Peter

What you should know: Face masks required except when visitors eat or actively ski. The resort is following all New York State guidelines for limiting capacity and social distancing.

Plattekill Mountain

Features 38 trails and a terrain park. Private, semi-private, and private family group lessons will be offered this season. Lessons are available for children as young as 3. Lift-serviced snow tubing open in 2-hour sessions on weekends and holidays; children must be at least 3 feet tall.

Rocking Horse Ranch

A family resort that includes downhill skiing, snow tubing, horse-drawn sleigh ridges, and skating. Best for the ski “dabbler.” Offers beginner classes (in the Never Ever Area) and free equipment rentals (snowboards not available) with your stay. Free pickup service available from the Amtrak train station in Poughkeepsie and Stewart International Airport in Newburgh.
What you should know: Masks are required indoors, and outdoors when social distance cannot be maintained.

Thunder Ridge Ski Area

Boasts 22 trails with many slow and gentle slopes for beginners and intermediates. Public transportation by Metro North available.
What you should know: State and local COVID-19 safety guidelines are enforced, including social distancing. Seasonal lockers are not available. Check the website for detailed operational updates.

Windham Mountain

Boasts 54 trails over two peaks and six terrain parks (for beginner to expert riders), plus an Adventure Park with ice-skating that is weather dependent, kids' snowmobiling, and snow tubing with a conveyor lift. Ski and snowboarding programs for kids ages 5-15. Lessons for children with disabilities are offered through the Adaptive Sports Foundation (call 518-734-5070 for more information). Bus service available from NYC via Adirondack Trailways (trailwaysny.com).


What you should know: Face masks/coverings required except during active skiing and riding, and social distancing is enforced. Some amenities will not be available, including the Children's Learning Center and on-site purchase of rental equipment. Ski Mountains in Upstate New York (worth the trek!)

Bristol Mountain Resort

Gore Mountain

Boasts 110 trails, including 28 glades, and eight freestyle areas. Daily ski and snowboard lessons for children as young as 4. Daycare available for children ages 6 months to 6 years. The new Nordic Center offers 5k for cross-country skiers and snowshoers.

Whiteface The Olympic Mountain

Mohawk Mountain Ski Area

Mount Southington

Features 14 trails, most of which are beginner and intermediate level, and two terrain parks. Introductory ski lessons for ages 4-9 are offered on weekends and holidays. Private ski and snowboard instruction also available.
What you should know: Face masks required. Social distancing enforced. The resort is operating at a reduced capacity this season. Priority will be given to those who've purchased season passes, joined race teams, established prepaid groups, or have enrolled in multi-week programming. Powder Ridge Mountain Park and Resort

Features 19 trails and four terrain parks, plus snow tubing and snowbiking. Beginner, intermediate, and advanced lessons for kids and adults, as well as lessons for ages 3-5. You can take the Metro-North train to Bridgeport. Offers year-round skiing and snowboarding.
What you should know: Masks will be mandatory indoors and outdoors. Social distancing and one-way traffic procedures will be implemented. Capacity for all indoor space held at a maximum of 50 percent. The resort is restricted to below 50 percent of itsr uphill capacity.

Ski Sundown

Has two terrain parks and night skiing or snowboarding in more than 70 scenic skiable areas. Group ski lessons available. Registration required for private lessons. Offers "start anytime" lift tickets and rentals, walk-in daily lessons, and family events.

Lessons (ski and snowboarding) and programs for kids and adults available. Approximately 20 miles north of the George Washington Bridge.
What you should know: Face masks required at all times except when eating. Social distancing is to be observed at all times/wherever possible, signed health declarations will be required at entry and customer temperatures will be taken at entry.



Mountain Creek Ski Resort

Shawnee Mountain Ski Area

Has 23 trails, two terrain parks, night skiing, and snow tubing, with tandem tubes for one parent and a child shorter than 46 inches. Offers a Mommy/Daddy & Me program for 4-year-olds and one guardian; the SKIwee program, for ages 5-6, is being offered in a smaller class size this season.
What you should know: No 3-year-old programs this year, but will be back next season. Face masks are required and social distancing guidelines will be adhered to. Visitors may ride the lift with the party they are traveling with other than that two people on the quad wearing masks. The lodges will have fewer seats and heated tents outside for extra seating and people who pack their own lunch. The resort suggests tailgating at your vehicle for a safe alternative. The park will be open, as will the top lodge, café and restaurant with limited seating.

Ski Big Bear at Masthope Mountain
